Coeliac and Crohn's disease were among the topics at a major conference focusing on nutrition and diseases of the gut at West Park Conference Centre recently. Organised by the centre for public health nutrition research as part of the Medical School's new initiative to develop nutrition and health in Scotland, it is one of a series of conferences on nutrition. Among the topics discussed were the causes and management of inflammatory bowel diseases - one of the major gastrointestinal problems of the present time. Particularly common in Scotland, these diseases are the focus of a new research team which came to Dundee from Cambridge in 1999 headed by Dr Geroge Macfarlane and Dr John Cummings. Their research focuses particularly on the role of bacteria which causes inflamation in the gut and the gut immune system and the possibility that diet may modulate this.
